Responding to ‘muddled’ speech

Another common communication difficulty that people may experience as dementia progresses is when they have something they want to say but cannot express their message properly and their speech appears to others to be ‘muddled’.

‘One time mum tried to tell me something but it had gone and she put her head down and started to cry and I remember taking hold of her hand and saying, “It’s okay.” She said that what she wanted to say was “there”, then she described it as “disappearing”. She still had that awareness – she was so upset about it. When she couldn’t get the words out right you did a lot of saying “Don’t worry mum, it doesn’t matter”, but it clearly mattered to her.’ (Family member)
